Lovely friends,
One of the questions I have been asked again and again over the years is how many guardian angels we actually have. Do we each get one angel who stays with us for life? Do we have several? Does our spiritual support change depending on what we’re going through? And if Archangel Michael suddenly seems to be everywhere in your life, did he just join the team, or was he hanging around all along waiting for you to notice him?
After more than 20 years of working with angels, doing intuitive readings, Reiki, meditation, and spiritual development work, I can tell you what I have come to believe. I can also tell you that I don’t think anyone living on Earth has been handed the official organizational chart for Heaven.
Different religious and spiritual traditions have different teachings about guardian angels, and I think that distinction matters. There are traditional beliefs about angels, there are modern spiritual beliefs, and then there is what people experience personally. Those three things sometimes overlap beautifully, and sometimes they don’t.
In my own work, I have never felt that spiritual support is limited to one presence standing beside us for our entire lives with no one else allowed into the room. I do believe we have guardian angel support that is deeply connected to us, but I also believe other angels and spiritual helpers can become more noticeable during different seasons of our lives.
That doesn’t necessarily mean we’re constantly being assigned new guardian angels. It may simply mean that spiritual support is bigger and more fluid than the labels we use to describe it.
Do We Have One Guardian Angel or More Than One?
The idea that every person has a guardian angel is probably the version most people grew up hearing. There is something wonderfully comforting about it: one loving spiritual presence that knows you, stays with you, and accompanies you through your life.
I believe there is truth in that idea.
Where I become less rigid is with the number.
Through my own spiritual work, I have never felt comfortable declaring that every human being has exactly one guardian angel, or exactly two, or seven, or twelve. I’ve seen plenty of very specific numbers floating around the spiritual world over the years, but I don’t know how anyone on this side of things could prove them.
What I have experienced is that spiritual support can feel different at different times. There may be a very familiar presence that seems constant, while another angelic energy becomes much stronger during a particular period of growth, healing, change, grief, creativity, protection, or spiritual awakening.
Sometimes people interpret all of those presences as guardian angels. Others would say you have one guardian angel and the others are angels, Archangels, guides, or spiritual helpers.
I am much more interested in the quality of the guidance than arguing about everybody’s job title.
Does Your Guardian Angel Stay With You for Life?
My belief is yes. I believe our primary guardian angel, or guardian angel presence if you prefer that language, remains connected with us throughout our lives.
I don’t believe your guardian angel gets frustrated because you haven’t meditated in six months, packs a celestial suitcase, and requests reassignment.
You don’t lose your guardian angel because you stop praying. You don’t lose them because you’re angry with God or Spirit. You don’t lose them because you make a mistake, ignore your intuition, go through a period where you don’t believe in any of this, or make a decision you later regret.
If loving spiritual guidance disappeared every time humans made questionable decisions, I suspect the angels would have a lot of free time.
What can change is our awareness.
There have been periods in my own life when spiritual connection has felt incredibly clear and others when everyday life was loud enough that I wasn’t paying nearly as much attention. That doesn’t necessarily mean Spirit went anywhere. Sometimes we’re simply busy being human.
This is also why I don’t believe you need to constantly perform rituals to keep your guardian angel close. Meditation, prayer, journaling, Reiki, and other spiritual practices can help you become quieter and more receptive, but I don’t think your guardian angel needs to be summoned like customer service.
You can simply talk to them.
Can Other Angels Come In to Help Us?
This is where my personal experience has always felt much broader than the idea of one angel and one person.
I do believe different angelic energies can become more noticeable depending on what we’re experiencing. Someone going through a major healing period may feel especially connected to Archangel Raphael. Someone who needs courage, protection, or stronger boundaries may suddenly feel very drawn to Archangel Michael. Someone trying to communicate, write, teach, create, or find their voice may begin noticing Archangel Gabriel.
That doesn’t necessarily make those Archangels your personal guardian angels.
I think of it more like having a primary spiritual relationship while also being able to receive help from a much larger spiritual world.
We do this in ordinary life without finding it confusing. You may have family members who have known you forever, a doctor you see when you need medical care, a friend you call when you need perspective, and someone else who knows exactly how to fix your computer when it decides to become possessed on a Tuesday morning. 😂
Different support doesn’t diminish the importance of the relationships that remain constant.
I think spiritual support can work in a similar way.

Are Archangels the Same as Guardian Angels?
I personally don’t use the terms interchangeably.
When I talk about a guardian angel, I’m talking about a spiritual presence that feels personally connected to an individual. When I talk about Archangels such as Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, Uriel, Metatron, Chamuel, or others I work with, I’m talking about larger angelic energies that many people can call upon and work with.
You don’t have to choose between them.
You can have a relationship with your guardian angel and also ask Archangel Michael for protection, Raphael for healing support, Gabriel for communication, or another Archangel whose energy feels relevant to what you’re navigating.
And I don’t believe Michael is unavailable because someone else is already talking to him.
We’re trying to understand something spiritual using very human ideas about time, location, schedules, and availability. I don’t assume angelic consciousness works according to the same limitations we do.
I also don’t spend much time worrying about how the logistics work. I have enough earthly logistics to manage.
Can Guardian Angels Change During Our Lives?
This is another place where I leave some room for mystery.
I believe there can be a guardian presence that remains with us, but I also believe additional support may come forward during different chapters of life. Whether someone calls those beings additional guardian angels, angelic guides, or simply angels who are helping temporarily is partly a matter of spiritual tradition and personal language.
Think about how much we change during one lifetime. The support we need as a frightened child is different from what we need when we’re starting a career, becoming a parent, ending a relationship, grieving someone we love, rebuilding our life, discovering a spiritual gift, or standing at a crossroads wondering what on Earth we’re supposed to do next.
It makes sense to me that the spiritual support we notice might change too.
There have been times in my own work when a particular angelic energy becomes incredibly strong around a person because of what they are currently moving through. Later, that energy may become quieter while something else comes forward.
I don’t interpret that as abandonment. I interpret it as support meeting us where we are.
Are Spirit Guides Guardian Angels?
I consider them different, although I know spiritual terminology varies tremendously.
When I talk about angels, I am referring to angelic spiritual beings. When I talk about Spirit guides, I am talking about another form of spiritual guidance that may have a different relationship to us and our development.
Some people experience their guides very distinctly. Others don’t separate the energies at all. Some people never use the term Spirit guide and are perfectly happy working only with angels, prayer, God, intuition, or their own spiritual tradition.
You don’t need to identify every presence around you in order to receive meaningful guidance.
Sometimes people get so focused on figuring out who is speaking that they stop listening to what the guidance is actually saying.
For me, discernment matters much more than collecting names.
Is the guidance loving? Is it grounded? Does it respect your free will? Does it encourage you to make thoughtful choices rather than frightening you into action? Does it help you become more capable in your own life instead of making you dependent on constantly asking Spirit what to do?
Those questions tell me far more than whether someone believes they have three guides and two guardian angels.
Are Loved Ones in Spirit Our Guardian Angels?
I don’t personally believe that our loved ones become angels when they die.
I know we use phrases like, “Heaven gained another angel,” especially when someone passes, and I completely understand the love behind that expression. But spiritually, I see angels and our loved ones in Spirit as different.
Your grandmother doesn’t have to turn into an angel to continue loving you.
I believe our loved ones can remain connected to us in ways we don’t completely understand. People often describe dreams, memories, sudden feelings of presence, meaningful coincidences, or moments when someone they loved feels especially close. I think those experiences can be incredibly comforting.
But I don’t automatically call that person a guardian angel.
To me, the relationship remains what it was. Your mother is still your mother. Your grandfather is still your grandfather. Your friend is still your friend. Love doesn’t need a promotion to become spiritually meaningful.
What If You Feel Like You Have Several Guardian Angels?
Then I wouldn’t worry about proving yourself wrong.
If you meditate and consistently experience more than one loving angelic presence, you can remain curious about it. You don’t have to immediately decide exactly who everyone is, why they’re there, what their rank is, or whether you’re supposed to create name tags.
Pay attention to how the experience feels over time.
One presence may feel very familiar and constant. Another may seem connected to healing. Another may appear during periods when you’re making important decisions. You might eventually understand those energies differently than you did when you first noticed them.
That’s normal in spiritual development.
Our understanding changes as we do.
I would much rather see someone remain open and curious than become so attached to a spiritual explanation that every experience has to fit it forever.
Do You Need to Know Your Guardian Angels’ Names?
No.
You can absolutely ask for a name if that feels meaningful to you. Some people receive a name very clearly in meditation or prayer. Others repeatedly hear or notice a particular name and feel a strong personal connection to it.
Other people get absolutely nothing.
That doesn’t mean they don’t have a guardian angel.
Names are useful for us because human beings like language. A name gives us something specific to focus on and can make a spiritual relationship feel more personal. But I don’t believe your guardian angel is standing around refusing to help because you haven’t figured out what to call them.
You can say, “Guardian angel, please help me.”
That works just fine.
And if a name does come to you, I would hold it lightly at first. See whether it continues to feel meaningful rather than trying to force certainty from one meditation.
Spiritual relationships become clearer over time.
How Do You Know Which Angel Is Helping You?
Sometimes you don’t.
I know that isn’t the most exciting answer, but I think it’s one of the healthiest ones.
You may have a strong sense that a particular Archangel is around you. You may notice repeated themes in meditation, dreams, intuitive impressions, or synchronicities. You may simply feel drawn toward one angel again and again.
That’s worth exploring.
But I don’t think every feather, repeating number, song on the radio, or flicker of light needs to become evidence that a particular angel has entered the room. Sometimes a feather is there because a bird was there first.
The spiritual meaning comes from the larger context.
What were you asking about? What were you feeling? Did something meaningful happen afterward? Is the same theme repeating in a way that feels unusual? Does the guidance make sense when you bring it back into your actual life?
Those are the things I pay attention to.
What If You Can’t Feel Any Angels Around You?
This may be one of the most important parts of this whole conversation.
Please don’t decide that everyone else has a spiritual support team and you somehow missed registration.
Some people are naturally very visual. Some feel energy physically. Some receive information through thoughts, dreams, knowing, emotion, or intuition. Others don’t experience anything they would describe as supernatural at all.
You can still have a spiritual life.
You can still pray.
You can still meditate.
You can still ask for guidance.
And you can still trust that you’re supported without having a dramatic experience to prove it.
I think social media has made people feel as though spiritual connection should be a constant parade of signs, visions, numbers, feathers, chills, dreams, and perfectly timed songs. My experience has been much quieter than that plenty of the time.
Sometimes guidance is a very ordinary thought that keeps returning.
Sometimes it’s suddenly knowing you need to make the phone call you’ve been avoiding.
Sometimes it’s feeling calmer about a decision after you’ve prayed about it.
Sometimes it’s realizing that your intuition has quietly been nudging you for three weeks while you’ve been waiting for something more dramatic to arrive.
Spirit doesn’t always need special effects.
So, How Many Guardian Angels Do You Have?
The answer I have settled into after all these years is that I don’t believe there is one number I can confidently give everyone.
I believe we have guardian angel support that can remain with us throughout our lives. I also believe other angels and spiritual helpers can become more active or noticeable depending on what we’re experiencing. Some people may experience that as several guardian angels, while others may understand it as one guardian angel surrounded by additional spiritual support.
I don’t think either interpretation has to become a competition.
If you feel one guardian angel beside you, wonderful. If you experience several loving presences, you don’t need to squeeze them into a system simply because someone online told you exactly how many angels you’re supposed to have.
After more than 20 years of this work, I care much more about whether your spiritual practice is helping you become more grounded, intuitive, compassionate, courageous, and capable in your own life.
Your angels can guide you, comfort you, encourage you, and help you notice possibilities. They can remind you that you’re supported when life gets difficult. But you still have free will. You still make the decisions. You still learn from experience, occasionally take the scenic route, and sometimes ignore the intuitive nudge until it has practically filed paperwork.
That’s being human.
So if you’re wondering how many guardian angels you have, go ahead and ask. Sit quietly. Pay attention. Stay curious about what you experience.
Just don’t get so busy counting angels that you miss the guidance.
Much love,
Lisa 💜
