A Closer Look at Angels

Closer Look at Angels - Lisa Beachy

What Exactly are Angels?

Essentially, angels are non-physical, spiritual beings created by God to be messengers and guardians. Across religions like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, angels are described as benevolent spirits that take on humanoid forms and often have wings.

Importantly, angels have abilities beyond humans, yet are not all-powerful. Instead, their purpose is to deliver messages, provide guidance, offer protection, and praise God. The word “angel” itself stems from the Greek word “angelos” meaning “messenger.”

How Do Artists Generally Portray Angels?

In Christianity and Islam, artists often depict angels as glowing, androgynous figures encompassed by two or more sets of wings. The wings are thought to signify the angels’ devotion to serving God.

Additionally, angels are sometimes shown with halos or bright glows surrounding their heads – this represents their enlightenment and closeness to God. However, Jewish angels more closely resemble normal humans and usually lack wings, as they may look indistinguishable from people.

Meanwhile, higher ranking angels like archangels are portrayed as brighter or having more wings compared to lower ranking angels. Seraphim, for instance, are described as having six wings.

What Kind of Powers Do Angels Possess?

According to religious texts and folklore, angels have an array of supernatural powers and abilities gifted to them by God:

  • They have the abilities of flight, invisibility, shapeshifting, and teleportation. This allows them to quickly travel between Heaven and Earth undetected.
  • Angels can miraculously heal injuries and ailments through God’s power. They also provide comfort to those in need.
  • Possessing supernatural strength, angels can lift heavy human objects with ease. This helps them in battle against demonic forces.
  • Angels have advanced intellect and knowledge of religious matters, the cosmos, and human nature according to texts.
  • As immortal beings, angels are immune to aging, disease, and earthly death. This enables their eternal divine service.
  • Angels can form protective barriers and wards against evil entities, safeguarding people and places.

However, angels’ powers are finite compared to the omnipotence of God. But their abilities do allow them to combat evil and carry out God’s will effectively.

How Many Angels Are Thought to Exist?

The exact number of angels is not clearly specified in religious writings. But many texts point to an enormous heavenly host existing:

  • In the Book of Revelation, God commands “many angels, numbering myriads of myriads.” This implies at least 100 million angels if not more.
  • Some Christian sources propose over 336 million angels ministering to humanity and praising God, or over 1016 angels total.
  • Islamic belief mentions angels called Maalik that help God run the universe. Their numbers are so large that only God knows the true count.
  • Even just considering guardian angels assigned to each person, multiplied across humanity this equals billions of angels with that singular role.

Ultimately, while no definitive total exists in doctrine, religious scholars agree angels number at minimum in the millions or billions, with potentially countless numbers beyond human quantification.

Do Angels Have Free Will?

Christian theology teaches that angels operate with “intellect” but not “free will” – they cannot refuse or disobey God’s commands. Islamic belief considers angels more akin to programmed robots just mechanically carrying out divine orders.

Similarly, Judaism expresses that angels’ sole function is to fulfill God’s will, with neither temptation nor evil within them. Accounts of fallen angels like Lucifer rebelling against God represent exceptions, not the rule.

Therefore, the consensus across faiths is that angels exemplify obedience and service over individual will. Their divine nature bars free will beyond what aligns with God’s greater intentions. But some nuances may exist between angelic orders and ranks.

How Do People Generally Perceive Angels Communicating?

According to scripture and tradition, angels employ various supernatural forms of communication:

  • Telepathy – Angels can read minds and convey messages mentally across vast distances.
  • Dreams and visions – Angels appear in spiritual visions or prophetic dreams to provide insights.
  • Miracles – Physical signs like moving objects and colored auras manifest as angelic guidance.
  • Possession – Angels occasionally speak through a person directly as a vessel.
  • Voices – Hearing angelic voices internally or audibly in the environment. Music sometimes accompanies the voices.
  • Texts – Sacred writings like scripture come from angelic revelation.
  • Disguised – Angels may deliver messages in person under the guise of a human form.

So angels are believed to make use primarily of mental or spiritual channels, miracles, and disguises to deliver revelations, rather than visible physical manifestations.

How Are Angels Organized in the Spiritual Hierarchy?

Across Judeo-Christian tradition, angels are organized into choirs and categories in a hierarchy:

Christianity

  • Seraphim – The highest order, they have 6 wings and attend God’s throne.
  • Cherubim – 4 winged angels with great knowledge, tasked with guarding Eden.
  • Thrones – “Wheels” bearing God’s throne called Ophanim in Judaism.
  • Archangels – The top tier such as Michael and Gabriel who oversee lower ranked angels.

Islam

-Israfil – Archangel who will blow horn to announce Judgement Day.

  • Jibra’il – Taught Muhammad and delivers revelations as Gabriel.
  • Mika’il – Provides nourishment and watches over Hell.

Judaism

  • Chayot Ha Kodesh – Angels called Thrones in Christianity, uphold God’s throne.
  • Erelim – Brave warriors against evil forces.
  • Tarshishim – Divine spirit angels that assume human form on Earth.

So there are similarities and overlaps but also distinctions between faiths in the angelic hierarchy and specific roles. But all categorize different choirs with varying status and responsibilities.

Conclusion: The Mysterious World of Angels

In the end, angels remain mysterious supernatural beings that the faithful believe sometimes intervene to guide and protect humanity. Their depiction varies across cultures, eras, and religions – but traditionally they act as emissaries from the divine realm. While not always visibly manifest, many believers do feel angels make their presence subtly known through blessings, visions, miracles, and spiritual whispers from God. They represent an integral connection between mortal life and the providence of the heavens.
