Lovely friends,
Iโve worked with angels and energy for more than twenty years, and Archangel Metatron has always had a very particular feeling to me. I associate Metatron with spiritual development, higher perspective, organization, clarity, and those times when there seems to be a whole lot happening in our minds and energy at once. If Michael feels like the angel I call when I need strength and protection, Metatron is one I tend to think of when I need to pull all the pieces together and see the larger pattern.
That is also why I enjoy using essential oils when Iโm working with Metatron. I don’t believe an essential oil magically summons an angel, and you certainly don’t need to buy anything in order to connect with Spirit. Scent simply gives us something physical to associate with an intention. When I smell frankincense, for example, my mind recognizes that I’m moving out of ordinary busy-life mode and into meditation, Reiki, prayer, or spiritual work.
I think sometimes we make connecting with angels much more complicated than it needs to be. We collect the right crystal, the right candle, the right oil, the right color, and before long it starts feeling like we need a spiritual supply closet before we’re allowed to talk to an angel. You don’t.
But I also love my oils and crystals, so I’m not giving those up either.
For me, they’re tools. The relationship with Spirit is the important part.
If you’re learning more about Metatron, you may also want to read my guide to the best crystals and gemstones for Archangel Metatron. Oils and crystals can work beautifully together because one gives us scent and the other gives us something tangible to hold while we settle into meditation.
Why I Use Essential Oils When Working With Metatron
Scent is powerful because our sense of smell is closely connected with areas of the brain involved in memory and emotion. We’ve probably all experienced this without thinking much about it. You smell something you haven’t encountered in years and suddenly you’re remembering a person, a house, a holiday, or a completely random moment from childhood.
I like using that natural association intentionally.
If I repeatedly use a particular scent while meditating, eventually that scent itself can become part of my cue to settle down and focus. I don’t need to claim that the oil is literally opening an energy center for it to be useful in my spiritual practice. I’m creating an environment that helps me become quiet enough to pay attention.
That’s especially helpful when I’m working with Metatron because I tend to associate this angel with a lot of mental and spiritual information. Sometimes we’re asking for clarity while our own thoughts are running around like they’ve had three cups of coffee.
Giving the body and mind familiar signals that it’s time to settle can help.
In my spiritual work, I also connect Metatron strongly with the upper energy centers, particularly the third eye and crown chakra. If you’re interested in working more intentionally with those energy centers, I have a separate guide to the angelic chakra system and activating the divine energy centers.
Again, I think of this as spiritual practice rather than medical treatment. Chakras belong to spiritual and energetic traditions. Essential oils can be part of the ritual we build around that work, but I don’t want us turning every spiritual association into a scientific claim.
There is plenty of room for spirituality and common sense in the same house.
My Favorite Essential Oils for Archangel Metatron
Over the years, there are certain oils I’ve come to enjoy using with Metatron more than others. There isn’t an official heavenly essential-oil chart that I’m aware of, so these aren’t rules. They are associations that fit the way I experience Metatron’s energy and the kind of spiritual work I tend to do with him.
You may discover that another scent works beautifully for you.
That’s allowed.
1. Frankincense
If I had to choose only one oil for working with Metatron, I would probably choose frankincense.
There is something about the scent that immediately changes the atmosphere for me. Frankincense also has an extraordinarily long history of ceremonial and religious use, so humans have been associating this resin with sacred space, prayer, and spiritual practice for a very long time.
For my own practice, I like frankincense when I’m meditating, doing Reiki, asking for clarity, or intentionally stepping away from the noise of the day. It has a deep, resinous scent that feels grounded enough to keep me present while I’m doing more expansive spiritual work.
That combination fits Metatron beautifully for me.
We can explore higher consciousness all we want, but eventually we still need to come back down here and live our lives.
2. Sandalwood
Sandalwood is another scent I love for that combination of grounding and spiritual focus.
I think of Metatron’s energy as expansive, but I don’t want spiritual development to leave us floating around disconnected from ordinary life. If I’m asking for insight about something, I eventually want to understand what I’m supposed to do with the insight.
Sandalwood has a warm, woody quality that I find especially nice for meditation, journaling, and intention-setting. I like it when I’m asking a larger question and want to sit with whatever comes through instead of immediately jumping to an answer.
Sometimes clarity needs a little room.
3. Lavender
Lavender is probably the least mysterious oil on this list, and maybe that’s exactly why I like it.
Sometimes the biggest obstacle to meditation isn’t that Spirit isn’t communicating. It’s that our own mind won’t stop talking long enough for us to notice anything else.
Lavender is one of the scents I associate with relaxation and creating a calmer atmosphere. If you’re trying to meditate with Metatron but you’re mentally making tomorrow’s grocery list, replaying a conversation, answering imaginary emails, and wondering whether you remembered to lock the door, starting with something simple and familiar can help you settle.
I don’t need lavender to perform a spiritual miracle.
Sometimes I just need it to smell lovely while I sit down and get myself together.
4. Clary Sage
Clary sage has traditionally become associated in modern aromatherapy and spiritual practices with intuition, creativity, and clarity, which makes it an interesting companion for Metatron work.
I especially like the symbolism of using it when we’re trying to see a situation differently. So much of intuitive development is learning to notice what’s already happening inside us without immediately dismissing it or forcing it to mean something dramatic.
When I’m working with the third eye from an energetic or spiritual perspective, I’m not imagining that an essential oil physically opens a psychic doorway in my forehead. I’m using the scent as part of an intentional practice of becoming quieter, more observant, and more receptive.
That’s a distinction I think we’ve gotten much better about making in spiritual communities.
We can enjoy the ritual without needing to exaggerate what the tool itself is doing.
5. Myrrh
Myrrh has a wonderful ancient history, and that alone makes it fascinating to me.
Like frankincense, myrrh has been used in religious, ceremonial, and aromatic traditions for thousands of years. When I’m working with it spiritually, that history gives the scent a feeling of depth and sacredness that works beautifully for meditation.
I particularly like myrrh when the intention is reflection, protection, release, or reconnecting with something deeper than whatever is happening around me at the moment. If I’m asking Metatron to help me understand a difficult period from a higher perspective, this is one of the oils I might reach for.
Sometimes we don’t need an immediate answer.
Sometimes we need enough quiet to see the pattern.
If fear is making it difficult to hear your own intuition clearly, you may also find my article on overcoming fear with angelic help helpful.
6. Helichrysum
Helichrysum is one I tend to associate with emotional release, transition, and letting go of what we’ve carried for a long time.
I want to be careful with the word healing here because essential oils are often given enormous medical and emotional claims online. I’m talking about the way I use the oil symbolically and spiritually, not suggesting that helichrysum treats trauma or replaces professional mental-health or medical care.
When I’m doing spiritual work around old patterns, completed chapters, or beliefs I’m ready to release, I like having something physical that represents that intention. Scent can become part of the marker between, “I’ve been carrying this,” and, “I’m ready to begin relating to this differently.”
Metatron fits naturally into that kind of work for me because I associate him with seeing the bigger pattern and understanding where something belongs in the larger story of our lives.

How I Actually Use Essential Oils With Archangel Metatron
I keep this much simpler than I used to.
One of my favorite methods is a diffuser. I’ll choose an oil based on what I’m working on, add the amount recommended for my particular diffuser and room size, and let the scent become part of the environment while I meditate, journal, or do Reiki.
Then I call Metatron in.
It can be as simple as:
Archangel Metatron, I invite your loving presence into this space. Help me quiet the unnecessary noise, see what I need to see clearly, and understand what serves my highest good. Please help me recognize the guidance that is useful for me and release what isn’t.
Then I sit.
That’s the part we sometimes skip.
We ask Spirit a question and then immediately start doing something else.
Give yourself a few minutes without trying to manufacture an answer. Notice what comes into your awareness. You may have a thought, an image, a feeling, a memory, or absolutely nothing dramatic at all.
Nothing dramatic doesn’t mean you did it wrong.
Sometimes clarity comes while we’re sitting there. Sometimes it shows up later when we’re washing dishes.
Spirit has never seemed particularly concerned with my preferred schedule.
A Quick Essential Oil Safety Note
Because we’re talking about essential oils, I want to update some advice I’ve given in older versions of this article.
Essential oils are highly concentrated. I don’t recommend putting undiluted essential oils directly on your skin, around your eyes, or on sensitive areas simply because you’re working with a particular chakra. If you’re going to use an oil topically, follow the manufacturer’s safety directions and use an appropriate carrier oil and dilution.
I also wouldn’t put essential oil directly into your eyes, ears, nose, or mouth, and I wouldn’t ingest an oil just because someone online says it’s spiritually beneficial.
Please be especially careful if you’re pregnant, have asthma or another health condition, take medications, have allergies or sensitive skin, or you’re using oils around children or pets. Different oils have different safety considerations, and “natural” doesn’t automatically mean harmless.
And this one is important because I know how much we spiritual people love our baths: don’t just drip essential oil directly into bathwater. Oil and water don’t mix, which means concentrated droplets can sit on the surface and come into direct contact with your skin. Use a properly formulated bath product or follow qualified aromatherapy guidance for safe dispersion.
I also don’t recommend dripping essential oil directly onto a favorite crystal. Some oils can damage or discolor surfaces, and some stones are porous or otherwise delicate.
We can connect with Metatron without ruining the amethyst.
Crystals I Like to Pair With Metatron
I do love combining crystals with essential oils, just not by pouring the oil on the stone.
If I’m diffusing frankincense, for example, I may hold an amethyst or clear quartz while I meditate. The oil becomes part of the atmosphere and the crystal becomes something physical I can hold while focusing on my intention.
Amethyst is one I associate with intuition, peaceful energy, and spiritual awareness. Clear quartz is wonderful for intention-setting and is probably one of the most versatile crystals in my collection. Lapis lazuli has long been associated with wisdom and communication, while selenite is one I personally connect with cleansing and angelic work.
I also like sugilite for spiritual reflection and fluorite when I want a little more mental organization and focus.
None of these stones is required.
You can sit in your favorite chair with nothing more than yourself and your intention and still have a meaningful meditation.
But I enjoy the ritual of choosing what I’m going to work with. Sometimes the physical object helps us return to the intention.
And sometimes it’s also just a really pretty rock.
I’m fine with both.
You can explore these associations more deeply in my full guide to crystals and gemstones for Archangel Metatron.
A Simple Metatron Meditation With Essential Oils
If you want to try this for yourself, choose one oil rather than turning your room into an essential-oil department.
Diffuse it safely and sit somewhere comfortable.
Take a few slow breaths and allow yourself to arrive where you actually are. You don’t have to force your mind to become perfectly blank. If you’ve had a chaotic day, acknowledge that you’ve had a chaotic day.
Then invite Metatron into your spiritual practice.
You might say:
Archangel Metatron, thank you for being with me. Help me organize what feels scattered, see beyond the immediate confusion, and recognize what deserves my attention now. Help me understand what I’m ready to learn, what I’m ready to release, and where my energy is best placed next.
Then sit quietly for a few minutes.
If something comes to mind, notice it.
If you suddenly remember something you need to do, you can jot it down and return to the meditation. If you feel emotional, give yourself a moment with that. If absolutely nothing happens, breathe and enjoy the fact that you gave yourself a few quiet minutes.
Afterward, I like journaling.
I wouldn’t worry about making every thought into a message from Metatron. Just write. Sometimes a pattern becomes obvious once it’s sitting there on paper.
That’s often where the clarity is.
How Do You Know If Archangel Metatron Is Around?
People experience angels differently, and I think we get ourselves into trouble when we create a checklist and decide everybody has to experience the same signs.
In modern angel spirituality, Metatron is frequently associated with sacred geometry, repeating patterns, violet, magenta, white or golden light, strong intuitive insights, and crown-chakra sensations. You may resonate with some of those associations and not others.
For me, recognizing an angel has much more to do with becoming familiar with the quality of the energy and the way guidance arrives over time.
If you suddenly feel tingling on your scalp, it could feel spiritually meaningful to you. It could also be a perfectly ordinary physical sensation.
We don’t have to make every goosebump a celestial emergency.
Pay attention to patterns.
If you’re repeatedly asking Metatron for clarity and begin noticing that you’re seeing a situation differently, making connections you hadn’t made before, or becoming aware of the same idea over and over, that is more interesting to me than trying to prove that one random sensation was an angel.
I have a separate article on how you may sense the presence of an angel if you’d like to explore that more deeply.
Which Metatron Oil Should You Start With?
Frankincense would be my first choice.
Not because Metatron requires frankincense, but because I enjoy its long association with sacred practice and I personally find it easy to incorporate into meditation. If you don’t like frankincense, don’t force yourself to sit in a room smelling something you hate because somebody told you an archangel prefers it.
Try sandalwood.
Try lavender.
Or use no scent at all.
Your spiritual practice needs to work for you.
I think after more than twenty years of doing this work, that’s one of the things I feel most strongly about. Spiritual tools are supposed to support the relationship. They aren’t supposed to become another collection of rules we’re afraid to get wrong.
What Metatron Has Come to Represent for Me
My understanding of angels has changed and deepened over the years. I don’t think that’s a bad thing. I would actually be a little concerned if I had spent more than two decades doing this work and still thought about every spiritual subject exactly the way I did when I started.
Metatron has become an angel I associate with perspective.
When everything feels scattered, I think of organization. When I’m too close to a problem, I think of stepping back far enough to see the pattern. When I’m learning something spiritually and my brain wants to understand all of it immediately, Metatron reminds me that understanding often comes in layers.
Essential oils fit into that practice because they help me intentionally mark the moment.
I smell the frankincense.
I sit down.
I stop doing twelve things at once.
I call in Metatron.
And I listen.
There doesn’t have to be anything more complicated than that.
Much love,
