Lovely friends,
Guardian angels, and especially the idea of connecting with guardian angels, are subjects I have talked about for years, and somehow I still find them fascinating.I have learned a lot over more than twenty years of doing this work, but I have also become much more comfortable admitting that there are things about angels I simply don’t know.
When I first started working seriously with angels, I had plenty of questions myself. Who exactly are our guardian angels? Does everyone really have one? Do they stay with us our whole lives? Can we know their names? What do they look like? How do we know when they are around? And, of course, there is the question almost everyone eventually asks when they begin developing spiritually: How do I know I’m not just making all of this up in my head?
After more than twenty years as a spiritual intuitive and Reiki Master, and thousands and thousands of readings, Reiki sessions, meditations, and conversations about Spirit, I have some pretty definite opinions about those questions. I have also changed my mind about a few things along the way, which I think is a healthy part of doing this work for a long time.
There can be a tendency in spirituality to take something mysterious and immediately create a whole rulebook around it. Your guardian angel does this. They look like that. This color always means this. Seeing a certain number definitely means your angel is trying to tell you something. I don’t think the spiritual world works quite that neatly, and I don’t think we need it to.
What I do believe, based on my own spiritual practice and everything I have experienced through my work, is that we have loving spiritual support around us and that we can learn to recognize it. I also believe that our relationship with that support can become surprisingly natural once we stop trying so hard to make something happen.
That is what I really want this guide to be about. I don’t want you analyzing every feather you find in the grocery store parking lot or worrying that everyone else is getting better angel signs than you are. I want to talk about what I believe guardian angels are, how I experience them, how I think they help us, how you can begin recognizing your own spiritual communication, and why I think staying grounded actually makes that connection stronger.
So, What Exactly Is a Guardian Angel?
Even the words guardian angel can mean different things depending on who you’re talking to. Angels and protective spiritual beings certainly didn’t begin with modern spirituality. Angels and divine messengers appear throughout Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and other spiritual traditions, although those traditions don’t necessarily understand angels in exactly the same way.
When I talk about guardian angels, I am speaking primarily from my own spiritual perspective and experience. I believe we have angelic support that is personal to us, and I experience guardian angels as loving spiritual presences who can guide, encourage, comfort, protect, and sometimes redirect us when we have gotten ourselves completely tangled up in something.
What I don’t believe is that they are here to run our lives for us. That distinction has actually become more important to me the longer I’ve done this work because I think healthy spirituality should eventually help us trust ourselves more, not make us afraid to do anything without receiving a sign first.
You can have angels around you and still make mistakes. You can ignore your intuition. You can take the wrong job, stay too long in a situation you already knew wasn’t right, or talk yourself out of something your gut was trying very hard to tell you. I’ve certainly had moments in my own life when hindsight made the guidance much clearer than it seemed while I was standing in the middle of the situation.
For me, having a guardian angel doesn’t mean handing your life over to Spirit and waiting for instructions. It means knowing that you have loving support available while you are still the person responsible for living your life.
Does Everyone Have a Guardian Angel?
I believe we all have angelic support available to us. Where I become much less interested in making a firm declaration is when people want to know exactly how many guardian angels everybody has.
I’ve heard all sorts of teachings over the years. Everyone has one guardian angel. Everyone has two. We have several. We have one primary guardian angel and other angels who come and go. We have an entire spiritual team around us. I think some of those descriptions may absolutely reflect people’s genuine spiritual experiences, but I don’t think we know enough to create an official angelic organizational chart.
And I’ve become perfectly okay with that.
What I have experienced is that certain spiritual presences can feel very familiar and personal, while other angels become much more noticeable during particular periods of our lives. If I am working through something involving protection, courage, or boundaries, I may intentionally work with Archangel Michael. During healing work, Raphael is often very important to me. If I’m working with communication, creativity, or expression, Gabriel may become much more noticeable.
That doesn’t mean your guardian angel disappeared while another angel came in for the shift. I think spiritual support is much more fluid than that, and I don’t believe we have to understand exactly how everything is organized before we can have a meaningful relationship with it.

What Do Guardian Angels Actually Help Us With?
The word guardian naturally makes us think about protection, and protection is certainly one of the things most commonly associated with guardian angels. I believe in asking angels for protection, and I have done that throughout my own spiritual practice for many years.
What I don’t believe is that spiritual protection means nothing difficult can ever happen to us.
I’ve heard many stories over the years from people who felt strongly warned not to do something, suddenly changed their plans, took a different route, felt compelled to call someone, or had an unexplained feeling that they needed to pay attention. Sometimes they later discovered there was a very good reason for that feeling, and I take experiences like those seriously.
At the same time, I would never tell someone that something painful happened because they didn’t listen to their angels, didn’t protect their energy correctly, or somehow weren’t spiritual enough. We live human lives, and painful things still happen. Illness happens. Accidents happen. Other people’s choices affect us. Having a spiritual practice does not give us control over every variable in life.
I am perfectly comfortable praying for protection, asking Archangel Michael and my angels to surround me, and then putting on my seatbelt. I don’t see any conflict there. Actually, spirituality mixed with common sense probably describes my approach to most things at this point in my life.
Protection can also be much less dramatic than we imagine. Sometimes it may be the feeling that tells you not to trust a situation. Sometimes it is finally recognizing that you need a boundary. Sometimes it is having the courage to leave something that has been draining you for far too long. Sometimes the help isn’t removing the situation at all. It is giving you the clarity or strength to deal with it differently.
What Do Guardian Angels Look Like?
People really want there to be a definitive answer to this one, and I don’t think there is.
Over the years, I have heard people describe angels in all sorts of ways. Some perceive a very traditional angelic figure. Others sense a human-looking presence, light, color, movement, wings, warmth, or simply an energy they know is there. Some people never see anything at all but have an incredibly strong sense of presence.
I don’t think angels have passport photos.
I also don’t automatically assume that the way we perceive an angel is a literal physical description of what that being looks like somewhere else. Our intuitive information still has to move through us, which means it moves through our minds, our symbolism, our culture, our expectations, and the spiritual language we already understand.
If someone has always associated angels with beautiful wings, it makes sense to me that their intuitive mind might present angelic energy that way. Someone else might see light or color. Another person may simply know there is something loving beside them without receiving any visual information whatsoever.
None of those experiences is more spiritual than another.
Clairvoyance gets an enormous amount of attention because seeing Spirit sounds exciting, but not everyone receives intuitive information visually. You may be much more clairsentient and feel spiritual energy. You may be claircognizant and simply know something without understanding how you know it. You may receive your strongest information through dreams, thoughts, physical impressions, or synchronicities.
If you’re waiting for a glowing angel to appear at the foot of your bed before you’re willing to believe you can connect, you could completely overlook the way your own intuition has been communicating with you all along.
What About Angel Wings, Gender, and Appearance?
I love angel wings. I use them in imagery, I find them beautiful, and symbolically they make perfect sense to me. Wings can represent protection, freedom, movement, and the idea of something moving between Heaven and Earth.
Do I know whether angels literally need wings to move around? No, and I don’t need to pretend that I do.
Religious descriptions of angelic beings are actually much more varied than the familiar human figure with two beautiful white wings that became so common in Western art. For me, the symbolism is meaningful without requiring me to decide that every detail we perceive spiritually must be literal.
I feel similarly about gender. I don’t personally believe angels are limited by human gender in the way we are, although we can certainly experience an angelic presence as masculine or feminine. I do that myself with different angelic energies. I see that as part of how we understand and relate to spiritual energy rather than proof that an angel has a human biological sex.
The same thing applies to age, skin color, hair, clothing, and other details people may perceive. Sometimes those details may carry meaning for the person receiving them, and sometimes I think our minds are simply giving recognizable form to something that may not naturally fit into a human shape.
I’ve become much more comfortable holding those details loosely. I don’t have to decide that everything is literal for an experience to be meaningful.
Can You Learn Your Guardian Angel’s Name?
You can certainly ask, but please don’t make yourself crazy trying to get an answer.
I have seen people become so focused on discovering their guardian angel’s name that the whole experience stops being about building a relationship and starts feeling like a spiritual pop quiz. If you don’t receive a name immediately, there is nothing wrong with you and there is nothing wrong with your connection.
You don’t actually need a name to begin talking to your guardian angel. You can simply say, “Guardian angel, please be with me. Help me recognize your guidance and feel your loving presence in a way I can understand.” They know who you’re talking to.
If a name begins coming to you naturally over time, pay attention to it. Maybe you hear it during meditation or receive it in a dream. Maybe the same name keeps appearing in unexpected places and gives you that little intuitive nudge every time you see it. You can notice those things without immediately deciding you’ve received official confirmation from Heaven.
One of the things that has helped me enormously in intuitive work is learning how to receive information without rushing to build a conclusion around it. Sometimes the most useful response is simply, That’s interesting. I’m going to pay attention to that.
Curiosity is actually a wonderful part of spiritual discernment.
How Do Guardian Angels Communicate With Us?
This is probably where most people really want to get to because eventually we all ask some version of, “Okay Lisa, but how do I know when they’re actually talking to me?”
The answer depends partly on how you naturally receive intuitive information.
Angel communication isn’t necessarily a voice booming into the room. In my experience, it is often much quieter. It may come through a thought that feels unusually clear or an immediate knowing that you need to wait, call someone, change direction, speak up, or leave something alone. You may receive information through dreams, notice a meaningful synchronicity, or ask for help and then have a completely ordinary conversation two days later that unexpectedly gives you exactly the perspective you needed.
Sometimes the communication isn’t information at all. It may simply be a feeling of peace arriving when you were overwhelmed or the sense that you aren’t dealing with something completely alone.
I think we miss a lot of spiritual communication because we expect Spirit to communicate in ways that look obviously spiritual. We are waiting for the angel, the flash of light, or the unmistakable voice, while the answer may already be moving through our actual lives.
That is one of the reasons I encourage people to pay attention to patterns over time rather than constantly demanding proof in the moment. The more you learn your own intuitive language, the easier it becomes to recognize when something feels different from your normal mental chatter.
What About Feathers, Angel Numbers, Songs, and Other Signs?
I enjoy signs. I can be practical and grounded and still love when something appears at exactly the right moment and makes me think, Okay, I see you.
Finding a feather can feel meaningful. Seeing the same number repeatedly can make you pause. A song can come on at exactly the right moment and hit you straight in the heart. A symbol you associate with someone or something may suddenly start appearing everywhere.
I think there is room in spiritual life for wonder.
Where I become more cautious is when signs start creating anxiety instead of comfort. If you’re checking the clock constantly because you’re afraid of missing an angel number, searching every number you see online, or worrying that Spirit sent you an important message and you failed to decode it correctly, I think we’ve moved away from guidance.
A sign should ideally bring you back to yourself. It may reassure you, make you pause, remind you of something you already know, or help you feel supported. You can enjoy the synchronicity without building your next five-year plan around the license plate in front of you.

How Do I Know It Isn’t Just My Own Mind?
Sometimes it is your own mind.
I know that isn’t nearly as exciting as telling you every thought that pops into your head came directly from an angel, but our brains produce thoughts all day long. We notice patterns, make associations, remember things, imagine things, worry about things, and occasionally create entire situations that haven’t happened and then get upset about them anyway.
That is why discernment has always been such an important part of the way I approach intuitive work.
Over time, you begin learning the texture of your own inner world. For me, fear and anxiety tend to have a very different quality from intuition. Anxiety often wants to keep discussing the matter. It comes up with one scenario, then another scenario, then an argument against the first scenario, and suddenly my brain has 47 tabs open.
Intuition is often much simpler. It may be a quiet feeling that says, Wait. Maybe it is, Call them. Or, This isn’t right for me. Sometimes it is simply a calm knowing that you’re okay even though you can’t explain why.
That doesn’t mean every quiet thought is an angelic message. It means that as you become more familiar with yourself, you get better at noticing when something feels different from your usual thinking.
I don’t think developing intuition means learning to believe every impression you receive. I think it means becoming a better observer of yourself.
Your Body Can Be Part of the Conversation Too
People sometimes expect spiritual communication to happen entirely in their heads, but many of us experience intuition through the body. You might feel warmth when you ask your angel to come close, notice goosebumps or tingling, feel your chest relax, or suddenly become calmer after you’ve asked for help.
At the same time, bodies are complicated, and I think we need to respect that.
This is especially personal for me because I have lived with neurological issues for many years. I know very well that bodies can create unusual sensations for completely physical reasons. Tingling can have a medical explanation. Flashes of light can have physical causes. A racing heart can be anxiety. We don’t have to assign spiritual meaning to every sensation we experience.
That has never made me less spiritual. If anything, I think it has made me more discerning because I’ve had to learn that two things can exist at once. I can believe deeply in energy, Reiki, intuition, and angels while also respecting the physical body, medicine, and what we know about the nervous system.
I don’t see any reason those things need to fight with one another.
Are Loved Ones Who Have Passed Away Our Guardian Angels?
My personal understanding of this has become pretty clear over the years. I don’t believe our loved ones become angels when they die. I believe they remain themselves.
Your grandmother doesn’t have to turn into an angel to continue loving you.
A loved one in Spirit may absolutely feel protective and supportive. You may dream about them, sense them around you, or experience something that immediately reminds you of them. I take those experiences seriously, but I personally distinguish them from angelic energy.
For me, angels are angels and loved ones in Spirit are loved ones in Spirit. I know not every spiritual teacher or tradition explains it exactly that way, and I’m okay with that. This is simply the understanding that has made the most sense to me through my own work and experiences.
I actually think there is something comforting about allowing our loved ones to remain themselves. Their relationship with us doesn’t have to become something completely different for their love to continue.
Can Guardian Angels Make Decisions for Us?
I believe we can ask for guidance, clarity, protection, courage, and reassurance. I also believe there comes a point where we have to make the decision ourselves.
This has become increasingly important to me because spiritual practice can accidentally turn into another form of anxiety. If you cannot decide whether to take a job, go on a date, make a purchase, have a conversation, or change something in your life without receiving a sign first, I don’t think the practice is strengthening your intuition anymore. It may actually be teaching you not to trust yourself.
Spirit can absolutely be part of your decision-making process, but so can facts, experience, common sense, your values, and what you genuinely want for your own life. I want spiritual guidance to help people become more capable of living their lives, not afraid to move without permission.
Sometimes I think the guidance has already happened and we’re still asking because we don’t like the answer.
I’ve seen that in readings, and I’ve certainly recognized it in myself. There are times when we don’t actually need another sign. We need enough courage to act on what we already know.
Can Guardian Angels Stop Bad Things From Happening?
I wish I could give you a perfect answer to this, but I can’t.
I’ve heard remarkable stories over the years about warnings, delays, sudden changes of direction, and moments when someone felt very strongly that something or someone intervened. I believe some of those experiences are genuinely spiritual.
I’ve also lived long enough to know that wonderful people who pray, meditate, work with angels, and have deep spiritual practices still experience illness, grief, accidents, heartbreak, and loss. I will never tell someone that a tragedy happened because they weren’t spiritually protected enough or didn’t listen correctly.
There are mysteries about being human that I don’t think we’re going to solve by creating spiritual rules around them.
I can believe that angels help us without pretending I understand why every painful thing is allowed to happen. Those two ideas can live together, and I think being able to hold that uncertainty has actually deepened my spirituality rather than weakened it.
What If You Can’t Feel Your Guardian Angel?
Then you are probably much more normal than the internet makes you think you are.
There can be periods when you feel incredibly connected to Spirit and other periods when you feel very little. I’ve experienced both. Stress, grief, exhaustion, anxiety, major life changes, and simply having a lot happening can make subtle spiritual impressions much harder to notice.
Sometimes we’re also trying much too hard. We sit down to meditate and immediately begin checking ourselves. Was that them? Was that a sign? Did I feel something? Was that thought mine? At some point, we’re no longer connecting. We’re conducting an investigation.
If you’ve been doing that, I would back off a little and make the relationship more natural again. Talk to your guardian angel the way you would talk to someone you trust. Tell them what’s happening. Ask for help. You don’t need a performance in return.
There have been times in my own life when spiritual signs seemed to be everywhere and other times when everything felt much quieter. I don’t interpret those quiet periods as abandonment anymore. Sometimes I think we’ve already received the guidance and are being encouraged to trust ourselves enough to move forward with it. Other times we’re simply busy, tired, distracted, or dealing with things that require our attention in the physical world.
A relationship doesn’t stop existing because every moment isn’t extraordinary.
Connecting With Guardian Angels: How I Would Begin
If you have never intentionally connected with your guardian angel before, I would keep the whole thing incredibly simple. You don’t need a complicated ritual, and you certainly don’t need to buy anything before you begin.
Find a few quiet minutes when you aren’t likely to be interrupted. If lighting a candle, holding a crystal, or putting on soft music helps you settle, that’s perfectly fine, but remember that those things are supporting the experience. They aren’t creating the connection.
Sit comfortably and take a few slower breaths. Give yourself a moment to settle, and then simply talk. You might say something like, “Guardian angel, I invite you to come close. Please help me recognize your presence and your guidance in a way that is loving, clear, and easy for me to understand. Help me trust what is meant for me without forcing an answer.”
Then give yourself some quiet.
The important part is not to immediately go hunting for an experience. Notice what you feel and what comes to mind, but don’t strain for something to happen. You may feel warmth or peace. You may have a thought. You may feel absolutely nothing at all, and that is okay too.
Then go live your life.
I really mean that because sometimes the answer comes while we’re meditating, but very often it doesn’t. It may come later while you’re walking, driving, folding laundry, talking to someone, or doing something completely unrelated. Spiritual guidance does not always arrive according to our preferred delivery schedule.
Talk to Your Angels About Your Actual Life
I don’t think you have to wait until something terrible happens before talking to your guardian angel. Some of the nicest spiritual relationships are built in ordinary moments because that is where most of our lives actually happen.
Talk while you’re walking or getting ready in the morning. Ask for help before a difficult conversation or an appointment you’re nervous about. Ask for clarity when you know you’re overthinking something. Ask for comfort when you’ve had a rough day, and say thank you when something works out in a way that gives you that little feeling that you had some help.
You don’t have to become formal every time you speak to Spirit either. Some of my conversations with Spirit are very spiritual and intentional, and some are probably much closer to, Okay, I could really use a little help here.
Both count.
I think the more naturally we allow spirituality to become part of our everyday lives, the less we feel like we have to switch into some special version of ourselves before we can connect.
You are also allowed to ask for help with small things. I don’t believe angels are sitting around deciding whether your problem is sufficiently important to qualify for assistance. If something matters to you, talk about it. That doesn’t mean I expect an angel to magically do everything for me. If I lose my keys, I’m still going to look under the couch, but I may also ask for help calming down enough to remember where I put them.
Spiritual support doesn’t belong only to the dramatic moments.
You Don’t Have to Be Psychic to Have a Relationship With Your Guardian Angel
This may be one of the most important things I want you to take from this guide. You do not have to become a professional intuitive to have a meaningful relationship with your guardian angel.
You don’t need to see Spirit the way I do, and you don’t need to receive information the way another medium or spiritual teacher does. Please don’t decide you’re bad at intuition because somebody else describes something more dramatically than you experience it.
Your natural spiritual language may be incredibly subtle. Maybe you simply know things. Maybe you feel energy. Maybe your dreams are vivid. Maybe your intuition becomes clearest while you’re walking outside and not trying to be intuitive at all.
Work with what is actually yours.
I think that is where spiritual development becomes much more useful because instead of trying to imitate somebody else’s experience, you begin understanding your own.
I Think We Make Spiritual Connection Harder Than It Needs to Be
This may be one of the biggest things I’ve changed my mind about over the years.
When we’re newer to spiritual development, there can be such an urge to collect information. We want to know which angel, which color, which crystal, which number, which prayer, which day, which sign, and exactly what everything means.
I understand the appeal because structure can help us learn. I have taught plenty of those things myself over the years, and I still enjoy working with angelic colors, crystals, meditation, Reiki, and symbolism.
But eventually I think the structure is supposed to help us build a relationship, not replace one.
You can know every traditional correspondence associated with an angel and still not trust your own intuition. You can also know almost none of those things and have a deeply meaningful spiritual practice because you have learned how to listen, discern, and trust yourself.
At this point in my life and work, I’m much more interested in whether a spiritual practice helps you become calmer, clearer, more compassionate, more discerning, and more capable of living your life. If working with your guardian angel helps you do that, wonderful.
If a spiritual practice is making you more frightened, dependent, obsessive, or afraid to make your own choices, I think it’s worth looking at the relationship differently.
What I Believe After More Than 20 Years of Working With Angels
After all these years, I believe we are supported, and I absolutely believe intuition is real and worth developing. I believe angels can be part of our lives in ways that are comforting, practical, surprising, and sometimes very difficult to explain. At the same time, I have become much more comfortable keeping my feet firmly on the ground while believing all of that.
I don’t need to turn every coincidence into divine intervention or decide that every physical sensation has a spiritual explanation. I also don’t need to know exactly what angels look like, how many are assigned to each person, or how Heaven has the whole thing organized. There are things I have experienced enough times over the years that I feel very confident about, and there are other things I simply don’t know. I’m actually much more comfortable saying that now than I was when I was younger and felt like I needed to have an answer for everything.
What interests me much more at this point is what our relationship with Spirit actually does in our lives. If believing that you have a guardian angel helps you feel less alone, listen more closely to your intuition, find courage when you’re afraid, or come back to yourself when fear has taken over, that matters to me. If your spiritual practice helps you become more thoughtful about your choices and more trusting of your own inner guidance, I think something worthwhile is happening there.
That’s also why I don’t think you need constant signs to know you’re supported. There have been periods in my own life when signs seemed to be everywhere and other times when everything felt much quieter. I don’t interpret the quiet periods as abandonment anymore. Sometimes I think we’ve already received the guidance and we’re being asked to trust ourselves enough to move forward with it. Other times life is simply busy, we’re tired, or our attention needs to be somewhere else for a while.
A relationship doesn’t stop existing because every moment isn’t extraordinary. I actually think there is something really peaceful about reaching a point where you don’t need Spirit to prove itself to you every morning. You can leave the door open, continue talking to your angels, notice what comes through, and still get on with living your life.

Start Where You Are
If you want a stronger relationship with your guardian angel, I wouldn’t begin by trying to memorize every angel sign or figuring out exactly which clair you have. I would begin by talking to them about your actual life. Tell your guardian angel what is happening, ask for help when you need it, ask for clarity when you’re confused, and say thank you when something gives you that unmistakable feeling that you weren’t navigating it entirely alone.
Then give yourself some room to notice how the connection develops without constantly testing it. Maybe you begin remembering more dreams. Maybe your intuition becomes clearer. Maybe you notice that answers seem to arrive through conversations or little synchronicities. Maybe you simply feel calmer after you talk to your angel. None of those experiences needs to look dramatic to be meaningful.
I also want you to keep questioning things when you need to question them. Use your common sense, let yourself enjoy a sign without turning it into an instruction, and pay attention to your intuition without assuming every thought came directly from Heaven. I don’t think discernment weakens a spiritual connection at all. In my experience, it makes the connection healthier because you’re no longer trying so hard to make everything spiritual.
Maybe that’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned from working with angels for more than twenty years. The connection doesn’t feel stronger to me because I’ve learned how to reach farther and farther into some mysterious spiritual realm. It feels stronger because I’ve learned how to recognize Spirit in the middle of ordinary life.
Sometimes that is a powerful intuitive experience or a sign that arrives at exactly the right moment. Other times it is the quiet feeling that I need to wait, make the phone call, change direction, trust what I already know, or simply stop trying to figure everything out for five minutes.
That is the kind of relationship with your guardian angel I hope this guide helps you build. Not one that makes you dependent on signs or afraid of getting something wrong, but one that helps you feel supported while becoming more confident in your own intuition and your own life.
After all these years, I don’t think our angels are asking us to become more mystical. I think they are helping us become more comfortable trusting who we already are, while reminding us that we don’t have to figure out every part of this life entirely on our own.
And I think that’s a pretty lovely relationship to have.
Much love,
Lisa 💜
